Sugar Skulls originated in Italy where figurines were made from sugar for religious decorations. The first mention of sugar art was from Palermo, Italy, when figures of lambs and angels were made to adorn the Catholic church for Easter. Their name comes from the clay molded sugar that authentic sugar skulls are made from, before being decorated with feathers, colored beads, foils and icing. The skulls are very bright and cheerful, meant to celebrate the lives of the deceased. Different skulls tell their own story based on shape. A small skull could be a sign that the skull is in honor of an infant who passed. Larger skulls symbolize adults or elders. Today they are a way to pay respects to ancestors who have transitioned.
